Vehicle features and options
Warning
The use of the system can lead to an increased
risk of accidents in the following situations,
for instance:
This chapter describes all standard, country-spe‐
cific and optional features offered with the series.
It also describes features that are not necessarily
available in your vehicle, for instance, due to the
selected options or country versions. This also
applies to safety-related functions and systems.
When using these functions and systems, the
applicable laws and regulations must be ob‐
served.
▷ On winding roads.
▷ In heavy traffic.
▷ On slippery roads, in fog, snow, or wet
conditions, or on a loose road surface.
There may be a risk of accident or risk of dam‐
age to property. Only use the system if driving
at constant speed is possible.
Cruise control
Warning
Concept
The desired speed can be incorrectly adjusted
or called up by mistake. There is a risk of acci‐
dent. Adjust the desired speed to the traffic
conditions. Watch traffic closely and actively in‐
tervene where appropriate.
Using this system, a desired speed can be ad‐
justed using the buttons on the steering wheel.
The system maintains the desired speed. The
system accelerates and brakes automatically as
needed.
General information
Depending on the settings, the cruise control
settings many change under certain conditions.

CONTROLS
Avoid approaching an object too fast. Avoid
driving off fast while PDC Park Distance Control
is not yet active.
PDC Park Distance Control
Concept
PDC is a support when parking. The system de‐
tects objects behind the vehicle. If the vehicle is
equipped with front PDC, objects in front of the
vehicle are detected too. Objects that you are
approaching slowly are indicated by signal tones
and a display on the Control Display.
Overview
With front PDC: button in vehicle
General information
The ultrasound sensors for measuring the dis‐
tances are located in the bumpers.
The range, depending on obstacles and environ‐
mental conditions, is approx. 6 ft/2 m.
An acoustic warning is first given in the following
situations:
Park assistance button
▷ By the front sensors and the two rear corner
sensors at approx. 24 in/60 cm from the ob‐
ject.
Ultrasound sensors
Ultrasound sensors of the PDC,
for instance in the bumpers.
▷ By the rear middle sensors at a distance to
the object of approx. 5 ft/1.50 m.
▷ When a collision is imminent.
Safety information
Functional requirements
Ensure full functionality:
Warning
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the
driver’s personal judgment in assessing the
traffic conditions. Based on the limits of the
system, it cannot independently react to all traf‐
fic situations. There is a risk of accident. Adjust
driving style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic
closely and actively intervene where appropri‐
ate.
▷ Do not cover sensors, for instance with stick‐
ers, bicycle racks.
▷ Keep the sensors clean and unobstructed.
Switching on/off
Switching on automatically
The system switches on automatically in the fol‐
lowing situations:
Warning
▷ If selector lever position R is engaged while
the engine is running or in electric mode.
Due to high speeds when PDC Park Distance
Control is activated, the warning can be de‐
layed due to physical circumstances. There is a
risk of injury or risk of damage to property.
The rearview camera also switches on.
▷ If equipped with front PDC: when obstacles
are detected behind or in front of the vehicle

2.5 mph/4 km/h.
When the distance to a detected object in the
front is less than approx. 12 inches/30 cm and in
the rear less than approx. 20 inches/50 cm, a
continuous tone is sounded.
You may switch automatic activation when ob‐
stacles are detected on and off. Via iDrive:
With front PDC: when objects are simultaneously
located both in front of and behind the vehicle,
an alternating continuous signal is sounded.

▷ On: the LED lights up.
▷ Off: the LED goes out.

verse gear is engaged when pressing the park
assistance button.
Warning
Signal tones
The approach of the vehicle to an object is
shown on the Control Display. Objects that are
farther away are already displayed on the Control
Display before a signal sounds.
An intermittent tone indicates when the vehicle
is approaching an object. E.g., when an object is
detected to the left rear of the vehicle, a signal
tone sounds from the left rear speaker.
A display appears as soon as Park Distance Con‐
trol (PDC) is activated.
The shorter the distance to the object, the
shorter the intervals.

Warning
False warnings
The system is designed to operate in certain
conditions and circumstances. Due to condi‐
tions or other factors, the system may not re‐
spond. There may be a risk of accident or risk
of damage to property. Actively intervene as
warranted. Refer to the information in this Own‐
er’s Manual regarding the scope of the sys‐
tem’s operation and limitations.
The system may issue a warning under the fol‐
lowing conditions even though there is no obsta‐
cle within the detection range:
▷ In heavy rain.
▷ When sensors are very dirty or covered with
ice.
▷ When sensors are covered in snow.
▷ On rough road surfaces.
Limits of ultrasonic measurement
▷ On uneven surfaces, such as speed bumps.
The detection of objects with ultrasonic meas‐
urements can run into physical limits, e.g., in the
following situations:
▷ In large buildings with right angles and
smooth walls, for instance in underground ga‐
rages.
▷ For small children and animals.
▷ In automatic vehicle washes.
▷ Due to heavy exhaust.
▷ For persons with certain clothing, for instance
coats.
▷ Due to other ultrasound sources, for instance
sweeping machines, high pressure steam
cleaners or neon lights.
▷ With external interference of the ultrasound,
for instance from passing vehicles or loud
machines.
To prevent false alarms, switch off automatic
PDC activation on obstacle detection, for in‐
stance in automatic vehicle washes.
▷ When sensors are dirty, iced over, damaged
or out of position.
▷ Under certain weather conditions such as
high relative humidity, wet conditions, snow‐
fall, extreme heat, or strong wind.
Malfunction
A Check Control message is displayed.
▷ With tow bars and trailer couplings of other
vehicles.
Red symbol is displayed, and the range
of the sensors is dimmed on the Control
Display.
▷ With thin or wedge-shaped objects.
▷ With moving objects.
