Refueling
Vehicle features and options
Warning
Simultaneous charging and refueling poses a
risk of fire if a sufficient safety distance from
easily flammable materials is not maintained.
There is a risk of injury or risk of damage to
property. Do not fill the vehicle with fuel and
charge it simultaneously.
This chapter describes all standard, country-spe‐
cific and optional features offered with the series.
It also describes features that are not necessarily
available in your vehicle, for instance, due to the
selected options or country versions. This also
applies to safety-related functions and systems.
When using these functions and systems, the
applicable laws and regulations must be ob‐
served.
Tank vent
General information
Concept
The vehicle is equipped with a special fuel tank.
The fuel tank is designed for special require‐
ments that arise from hybrid operation of the ve‐
hicle, i.e., alternating drive with combustion en‐
gine or electric motor.
Follow the fuel recommendation, refer to
page 204, prior to refueling.
To also ensure all engine functions under unfav‐
orable conditions, for instance steep vehicle incli‐
nations, at least 3 US gal/10 liters fuel should be
refueled.
General information
Do not refuel unless the engine is at a standstill
and the selector lever is in position P/N, other‐
wise the buildup of pressure may cause the fuel
nozzle to shut off prematurely.
Excess pressure may build up in the fuel tank as
a result of gasoline vapors; this pressure is dissi‐
pated before the fuel cap is opened.
Overview
Safety information
NOTICE
With a driving range of less than
30 miles/50 km the engine may no longer have
sufficient fuel. Engine functions are not en‐
sured anymore. There is a risk of damage to
property. Refuel promptly.
The button is located on the driver's side on the
door armrest.

2. Turn the fuel cap counterclockwise.
Venting the tank
1. Switch off drive-ready state.
2.
Press the button to start the pressure
equalization.
The tank venting status is displayed in the in‐
strument cluster. In rare cases, tank venting
can last several minutes.
When tank venting has finished, a message is
displayed in the instrument cluster. The fuel
filler flap is released for opening.
3. Place the fuel cap in the bracket attached to
the fuel filler flap.
3. Open the fuel filler flap.
If it is not possible to open the fuel filler flap
after tank venting, press the button again.
If it is still not possible to open the fuel filler
flap even after pressing the button again, un‐
lock the fuel filler flap manually, refer to
page 202.
Fuel cap
Closing
Opening
Before opening, vent the tank.
Warning
1. Briefly press the rear edge of the fuel filler
flap.
The retaining strap of the fuel cap can be jam‐
med and crushed during closing. The cap can‐
not be correctly closed. Fuel or fuel vapors can
escape. There is a risk of injury or risk of dam‐
age to property. Pay attention that the retaining
strap is not jammed or crushed when closing
the cap.
1. Fit the cap and turn it clockwise until you
clearly hear a click.
2. Press on the fuel filler flap until it engages.
Emergency unlocking
It may be necessary in certain situations to un‐
lock the fuel filler flap manually, for instance with
an electrical fault.

Refueling
MOBILITY
The release is located in the cargo area.
1. Open the cover on the right side trim.
Follow the following when
refueling
General information
When refueling, insert the filler nozzle completely
into the filler pipe. Lifting up the fuel pump nozzle
during refueling causes:
▷ Premature switching off.
▷ Reduced return of the fuel vapors.
The fuel tank is full when the filler nozzle clicks
off the first time.
2. Pull the green knob with the fuel pump sym‐
bol. This releases the fuel filler flap.
Make sure that the fuel cap is closed properly af‐
ter refueling, otherwise the emissions warning
light may light up.
Follow safety regulations posted at the gas sta‐
tion.
Safety information
Warning
Simultaneous charging and refueling poses a
risk of fire if a sufficient safety distance from
easily flammable materials is not maintained.
There is a risk of injury or risk of damage to
property. Do not fill the vehicle with fuel and
charge it simultaneously.
3. Open the fuel filler flap.
4. Carefully open the fuel cap. Excess pressure
can build up in the fuel tank from gasoline va‐
por.
NOTICE
Fuels are toxic and aggressive. Overfilling of the
fuel tank can damage the fuel system. Painted
surfaces may be damaged by contact with fuel.
Escaping fuel can harm the environment. There
is a risk of damage to property. Avoid overfilling.
5. Refuel the vehicle as usual. The excess pres‐
sure in the tank may make refueling difficult,
for instance the fuel pump nozzle may shut
off frequently.
Have the vehicle checked immediately by a deal‐
er's service center or another qualified service
center or repair shop.
