Opening and closing  
vehicle key with you so that the vehicle can be  
opened from the outside.  
Vehicle features and options  
This chapter describes all standard, country-spe‐  
cific and optional features offered with the series.  
It also describes features that are not necessarily  
available in your vehicle, for instance, due to the  
selected options or country versions. This also  
applies to safety-related functions and systems.  
When using these functions and systems, the  
applicable laws and regulations must be ob‐  
served.  
Warning  
Unlocking from the inside is only possible with  
special knowledge.  
Persons who spend a lengthy time in the vehi‐  
cle while being exposed to extreme tempera‐  
tures are at risk of injury or death. Do not lock  
the vehicle from the outside when there are  
people in it.  
Vehicle key  
Warning  
General information  
Unattended children or animals in the vehicle  
can cause the vehicle to move and endanger  
themselves and traffic, for instance due to the  
following actions:  
The vehicle is supplied with two vehicle keys  
with integrated key.  
Each vehicle key contains a replaceable battery,  
refer to page 64.  
▷ Pressing the Start/Stop button.  
▷ Releasing the parking brake.  
Depending on the equipment and country ver‐  
sion, various settings, refer to page 76, can be  
configured for the button functions.  
▷ Opening and closing the doors or win‐  
dows.  
A personal driver profile, refer to page 73, for  
each vehicle key is stored in the vehicle.  
▷ Engaging selector lever position N.  
▷ Using vehicle equipment.  
To provide information on maintenance require‐  
ments, the service data is stored in the vehicle  
key, refer to page 224.  
There is a risk of accidents or injuries. Do not  
leave children or animals unattended in the ve‐  
hicle. Take the vehicle key with you when exit‐  
ing and lock the vehicle.  
To prevent possible locking in of the vehicle key,  
take the vehicle key with you when exiting the  
vehicle.

doors from the inside and lock themselves in. In  
this case, the vehicle cannot be opened from  
the outside. There is a risk of injury. Take the

Driver's door.  
With anti-theft protection: Anti-theft protec‐  
tion is switched on. It prevents the doors from  
being unlocked using the door openers.  
Press the button on the vehicle key again to  
unlock the front passenger door.  
All doors.  
The alarm system, refer to page 77, is  
switched on.  
In addition, the following functions are executed:  
Unlocking is confirmed by the turn signals  
and the horn. This function must be activated  
in the settings, refer to page 76.  
If the drive-ready state is still switched on when  
you lock the vehicle, the vehicle horn honks  
twice. In this case, the drive-ready state must be  
switched off by means of the Start/Stop button.  
The settings stored in the driver profile, refer  
to page 73, are applied.  
Switching on interior lights  
The interior lights, refer to page 133, are  
switched on, unless they were manually  
switched off.  
Press the button on the vehicle key with  
the vehicle locked.  
Depending on the settings, the welcome light  
and headlight courtesy delay feature, refer to  
page 130, are switched on.  
This function is not available, if the interior lights  
were switched off manually.

The tailgate is unlocked and can be swung up‐  
ward.  
Tailgate  
With alarm system: panic mode  
You can trigger the alarm system if you find your‐  
self in a dangerous situation.  
General information  
To avoid locking the vehicle key in the vehicle,  
do not place the vehicle key in the cargo area.  
Press the button on the vehicle key  
and hold for at least 3 seconds.  
Depending on the vehicle equipment and coun‐  
try version, it is possible to specify whether the  
doors are also unlocked when unlocking using  
the vehicle key. To perform settings, refer to  
page 76.  
Briefly press the button on the vehicle key  
three times in succession.  
To switch off the alarm: press any button.  
Without alarm system: switching the  
headlight courtesy delay feature on  
Safety information  
The headlight courtesy delay feature must be set  
for the vehicle key button. Settings, refer to  
page 76.  
Warning  
Body parts can be jammed when operating the  
tailgate. There is a risk of injury. Make sure that  
the area of movement of the tailgate is clear  
during opening and closing.  
Press the button on the vehicle key.  
The duration can be set in the Control Display.  
Replacing the battery  
Warning  
1. Remove the integrated key from the vehicle  
key, refer to page 66.  
The tailgate pivots out when it opens. There is  
a risk of injury or risk of damage to property.  
Make sure that the area of movement of the  
tailgate is clear during opening and closing.  
2. Place the integrated key underneath the bat‐  
tery compartment cover, arrow 1, and lift the  
cover with a lever movement of the  
integrated key, arrow 2.  
NOTICE  
Sharp-edged or pointed objects can hit the  
windows and heat conductors while driving.  
There is a risk of damage to property. Cover  
the edges and ensure that pointed objects do  
not hit the windows.  
Opening  
Press the button on the vehicle key for  
approx. 1 second.

3. Push battery in the direction of the arrow us‐  
ing a pointed object and lift it out.  
Shielding of the vehicle key due to metal ob‐

Switching the drive-ready state on via  
emergency detection of the vehicle key  
Have old batteries disposed of by a deal‐  
er’s service center or another qualified  
service center or repair shop or take  
them to a collection point.  
Additional vehicle keys  
Additional vehicle keys are available from a serv‐  
ice center or another qualified service center or  
repair shop.  
Loss of vehicle keys  
A lost vehicle key can be blocked and replaced  
by a dealer’s service center or another qualified  
service center or repair shop.  
It is not possible to switch on the drive-ready  
state if the vehicle key has not been detected.  
Proceed as follows in this case:  
1. Hold the vehicle key with its tip against the  
marked area on the steering column. Pay at‐  
tention to the display in the instrument clus‐  
ter.  
Malfunction  
General information  
A Check Control message is displayed.  
2. If the vehicle key is detected:  
Switch on drive-ready state within 10 sec‐  
onds.  
Vehicle key recognition by the vehicle may mal‐  
function under the following circumstances:  
If the vehicle key is not recognized, slightly  
change the position of the vehicle key and repeat  
the procedure.  
The battery of the vehicle key is discharged.  
For replacing the battery, refer to page 64.

Unlocking via the door lock  
What precautions can be taken to be able to  
open a vehicle with an accidentally locked in ve‐  
hicle key?  
The options provided by the Remote Serv‐  
ices of the BMW Connected app include the  
ability to lock and unlock a vehicle.  
This requires an active BMW Connected‐  
Drive contract and the BMW Connected app  
must be installed on a smartphone.  
The driver's door can be unlocked at the door  
lock using the integrated key.  
Unlocking the vehicle can be requested via  
the BMW ConnectedDrive Call Center.  
An active BMW ConnectedDrive contract is  
required.  
Locking from the outside  
1. Close the driver's door from the outside.  
2. Enter the vehicle via the front passenger side  
and close the front passenger door.  
Integrated key

The driver's door can be locked and unlocked  
without the vehicle key using the integrated key.

BMW display key  
General information  
The BMW display key is supplied instead of a ve‐  
hicle key, along with an additional mechanical  
key. If the display key is used, the mechanical  
key should be carried with you, for instance in  
the wallet.  
The display key supports all functions of the ve‐  
hicle key.

erability of the standard buttons is retained  
until the battery is completely discharged.

charged. If the battery is fully discharged, it

Due to the large number of USB chargers  
available on the market, it cannot be guaran‐  
teed that every charger will function properly.  
The charging duration depends on the  
charger used.  
During charging, the charger and the display  
key may become warm. At higher tempera‐  
tures, the charge current through the display  
key may be reduced, and in isolated cases  
the charge process may be interrupted tem‐  
porarily.

It is not possible to switch on the drive-ready  
state if the display key has not been detected.  
Proceed as follows in this case:  
1. Hold the display key with its back against the  
marked area on the steering column. Pay at‐  
tention to the display in the instrument clus‐  
ter.

lever is raised.  
The vehicle automatically detects the vehicle key  
when it is in close proximity or in the car's inte‐  
rior.

Functional requirements  
To lock the vehicle, the vehicle key must be  
outside of the vehicle near the doors.  
Pull up the release on the underside of the lever,  
arrow 1, then push the lever forwards, arrow 2.  
The next unlocking and locking cycle is not  
possible until after approx. 2 seconds.  
LED in the driver's door  
Unlocking  
The LED signals have the follow‐  
ing meaning:  
1x flashing: door is locked.  
The LED then remains on for  
a while, if the vehicle was  
locked from the outside.  
The LED then lights up per‐  
manently, if the vehicle was  
locked from the inside or auto‐  
matically while driving off.  
Before pressing the door opener button, draw  
your hand across the sensor surface.  
Flash twice: door is unlocked.

There are three driver profiles with which per‐  
sonal vehicle settings can be stored. Every vehi‐  
cle key has been assigned one of these driver  
profiles.  
Opening and closing  
Opening from the outside  
If the vehicle is unlocked using a vehicle key, the  
assigned personal driver profile will be activated.  
All settings stored in the driver profile are auto‐  
matically applied.  
Press the button on the vehicle key for  
approx. 1 second.  
Depending on the setting, the doors may also be  
unlocked. Unlocking using the vehicle key, refer  
to page 64.  
If several drivers use their own vehicle keys, the  
vehicle will apply the personal settings as it is be‐  
ing unlocked. These settings are also restored, if  
the vehicle has been used in the meantime by a  
person with a different vehicle key.  
The tailgate is opened slightly and can be swung  
upward.  
Opening from the inside  
Changes to the settings are automatically stored  
in the driver profile currently activated.  
With the vehicle stationary, press the  
button in the door armrest.  
If another driver profile is selected via iDrive, the  
settings stored in it will be applied automatically.

The new driver profile is assigned to the vehicle  
key that is currently in use.  
Profile management  
Selecting a driver profile  
Regardless of the vehicle key in use, a different  
driver profile may be activated. This allows you to  
call up personal vehicle settings, even if you did  
not unlock the vehicle with your own vehicle key.  
There is an additional guest profile available that  
is not assigned to any vehicle key. It can be used  
to apply settings in the vehicle without changing  
the personal driver profiles.  
Functional requirements  
Via iDrive:  
For the system to be able to identify the driver  
profile associated to a particular driver, the de‐  
tected vehicle key must be clearly allocated to  
the driver.

This is the case when:  
The driver is only carrying his or her own ve‐  
hicle key.  
All settings stored in the selected driver pro‐  
file are automatically applied.

The driver gets into the vehicle through the  
driver's door.  
If the driver profile is already assigned to a dif‐  
ferent vehicle key, this driver profile will apply  
to both vehicle keys.  
Adjusting  
The settings for the following systems and func‐  
tions are stored in the active profile. The scope  
of storable settings depends on country and  
equipment.  
Using a guest profile  
The guest profile is for individual settings that are  
stored in none of the three personal driver pro‐  
files.

Panic mode  
You can trigger the alarm system if you find your‐  
self in a dangerous situation.  
Interior motion sensor  
The windows must be closed for the system to  
function properly.  
Press the button on the vehicle key  
and hold for at least 3 seconds.  
Briefly press the button on the vehicle key  
three times in succession.  
Avoiding unintentional alarms  
General information  
To switch off the alarm: press any button.  
The tilt alarm sensor and interior motion sensor  
can trigger an alarm, although no unauthorized  
action occurred.  
Indicator light on the interior mirror  
Possible situations for an unwanted alarm:  
In automatic vehicle washes.  
In duplex garages.  
During transport on trains carrying vehicles, at  
sea or on a trailer.  
With animals in the vehicle.  
When the vehicle is locked after start of fuel‐  
ing.  
The indicator light flashes briefly every 2 sec‐  
onds:  
The tilt alarm sensor and the interior motion sen‐  
sor can be switched off in such situations.  
The alarm system is switched on.  
Indicator light flashes for approx. 10 seconds,  
then it flashes briefly every 2 seconds:

Interior motion sensor and tilt alarm sensor  
are not active, as doors, hood, or tailgate are  
not correctly closed. Correctly closed access  
points are secured.  
Press the button on the vehicle key within  
10 seconds as soon as the vehicle is  
locked.  
When the still open access points are closed,  
the interior motion sensor and tilt alarm sen‐  
sor will be switched on.  
The indicator light lights up for approx. 2 sec‐  
onds and then continues to flash.  
The tilt alarm sensor and interior motion sensor  
are switched off until the vehicle is locked again.  
The indicator light goes out after unlocking:  
The vehicle has not been tampered with.  
The indicator light flashes after unlocking un‐  
til the radio-ready state is switched on, but no  
longer than approx. 5 minutes:

Concept  
When operating the windows, body parts and  
objects can be jammed. There is a risk of injury  
or risk of damage to property. Make sure that  
the area of movement of the windows is clear  
during opening and closing.  
The jam protection prevents objects or body  
parts becoming jammed between the door frame  
and window while a window is being closed.  
Overview

If resistance or a blockage is detected while a  
window is being closed, the closing action is in‐  
terrupted.
