Vehicle features and options
This chapter describes all standard, country-
specific and optional features offered with the
series. It also describes features that are not
necessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and
systems, the applicable country provisions
must be observed.
Automatic vehicle washes
Safety information
NOTE
Improper use of automatic vehicle
washes can cause damage to the vehicle.
There is a risk of property damage. Information
the following instructions:

Give preference to cloth vehicle washes or
those that use soft brushes in order to
avoid paint damage.
Vehicle washes
General information
▷
Avoid vehicle washes with guide rails
higher than 4 in/10 cm to avoid damage to
the chassis.
Regularly remove foreign objects such as
leaves in the area below the windshield when
the hood is raised.

Observe the tire width of the guide rail to
avoid damage to tires and rims.
Wash your vehicle frequently, particularly in
winter. Intense soiling and road salt can dam‐
age the vehicle.
Fold in exterior mirrors to avoid damage to
the exterior mirrors.
Deactivate rain sensor, if necessary, to
avoid damage to the wiper system.◀
Steam blaster and high-pressure
washer
If necessary, switch off automatic PDC activa‐
tion on obstacle detection, e.g., in vehicle
washes, to reduce PDC false alarms.
Safety information
NOTE
When cleaning with high-pressure wash‐
ers, components can be damaged due to the
pressure or temperatures being too high.
There is a risk of property damage. Maintain
sufficient distance and do not spray too long
continuously. Follow the operating instructions
for the high-pressure washer.◀
Before driving into a vehicle wash
In order to ensure that the vehicle can roll in a
vehicle wash, take the following steps:
Steptronic transmission:
1. Drive into the vehicle wash.
2. Engage selector lever position N.
3. Deactivate Automatic Hold, refer to
page 72.

Maximum temperature: 140 ℉/60 ℃.
4. Release the parking brake.
5. Switch the engine off.
Minimum distance from sensors, cameras,
seals: 12 inches/30 cm.

In this way, the ignition remains switched
on, and a Check-Control message is dis‐
played.
After washing the vehicle
After washing the vehicle, apply the brakes
briefly to dry them; otherwise, braking action
can be reduced. The heat generated during
braking dries brake discs and brake pads and
protects them against corrosion.
NOTE
Selector lever position P is automati‐
cally engaged when the ignition is
switched off. There is a risk of property
damage. Do not switch drive-ready state
off in vehicle washes.◀
Completely remove all residues on the win‐
dows, to minimize loss of visibility due to
smearing and to reduce wiper noises and
wiper blade wear.
Some vehicle washes do not permit persons in
the vehicle. The vehicle cannot be locked from
the outside when in selector lever position N. A
signal sounds when an attempt is made to lock
the vehicle.

Exiting a vehicle wash
To start the engine with Steptronic transmis‐
sion:
General information
BMW recommends using vehicle care and
cleaning products from BMW.
1. Make sure that the vehicle key is in the ve‐
hicle.

2. Depress the brake pedal.
WARNING
3. Press the Start/Stop button.
Cleansers can contain substances that
are dangerous and harmful to your health.
There is a risk of injury. When cleaning the in‐
terior, open the doors or windows. Only use
products intended for cleaning vehicles. Fol‐
low the instructions on the container.◀
Pressing the Start/Stop button without step‐
ping on the brake turns the ignition off.
Selector lever position
Selector lever position P is engaged automati‐
cally:

When the ignition is switched off.
After approx. 15 minutes.
Regular care contributes to driving safety and
value retention. Environmental influences in
areas with elevated air pollution or natural con‐
taminants, such as tree resin or pollen can af‐
fect the vehicle's paintwork. Tailor the fre‐
quency and extent of your vehicle care to
these influences.
Headlamps

Do not rub dry and do not use abrasive or
acidic cleansers.
▷
Soak areas that have been dirtied, e.g.,
from insects, with shampoo and wash off
with water.
Aggressive substances such as spilled fuel, oil,
grease or bird droppings, must be removed im‐
mediately to prevent the finish from being al‐
tered or discolored.

Thaw ice with de-icing spray; do not use an
ice scraper.
