Depending on the situation, the vehicle is in one
of the three states:
▷ Rest state.

▷ Standby state.
▷ Drive-ready state.
Unsupervised children or pets in the vehicle
can set the vehicle in motion and endanger
themselves or other road users, for example by
the following actions:
Rest state
▷ Pressing the start/stop button.
▷ Releasing the parking brake.
Principle
If the vehicle is in rest state, it is switched off. All
electrical consumers are deactivated.
▷ Opening and closing doors or windows.
▷ Engaging selector lever position N.
▷ Operating vehicle equipment.
There is a risk of accident or injury. Do not
leave children or pets unsupervised in the vehi‐
cle. When leaving the vehicle, take the vehicle
key with you and lock the vehicle.
General
The vehicle is in rest state before you open it
from outside and once you have left the vehicle
and locked it.
Automatic rest state
The vehicle switches automatically to rest state,
for example under the following conditions:

▷ After a few minutes, if no operation is per‐
formed on the vehicle.
Standby state
▷ When the battery state of charge is low.
Principle
When standby state is activated, most functions
can be operated while the vehicle is still station‐
ary. Any desired settings can be performed.
▷ Depending on the iDrive setting: if one or
both of the front doors is opened when exit‐
ing the vehicle after a journey.
In some situations, rest state will not be estab‐
lished automatically, for example during a tele‐
phone call or if the low-beam headlights are
switched on.
General
The vehicle switches to standby state after the
front doors are opened from the outside.

Drive-ready state
Manual rest state
To establish rest state in the vehicle at the end of
a journey:
Principle
Switching on drive-ready state corresponds to
starting the engine.
General
Some functions, for example Dynamic Stability
Control DSC, can only be operated when drive-
ready state is switched on.
Please observe the additional information about
drive-ready state, see page 122.
Press and hold the button, until
the OFF display on the instru‐
ment cluster turns off.
Switching on drive-ready state
Drive-ready state is switched on
using the Start/Stop button:
1. Press the brake.
2. With manual transmission: press the clutch
and engage neutral.

3. Press the start/stop button.
Display in the instrument cluster
When drive-ready state is switched on, the revo‐
lution counter shows the current engine speed.
Switching off drive-ready state
To switch off drive-ready state, press the start/
stop button. The vehicle changes to standby
state.
