Charging the vehicle -> Location-based charging settings for your BMW i4 2021-2025
Charging the vehicle
MOBILITY
The range will be reduced if pre-condition-
ing is activated without a charging cable
connected.
Activate/deactivate the function
1.
Apps menu
2. "Vehicle"
▷
Planned air conditioning at the set depar-
ture time.
3. "Charging"
4. "Location-based charging settings"
5. "Save based on location"
Additional information:
Pre-conditioning, refer to page 258.
If the function is deactivated, no location-
based settings are saved and saved settings
are not enabled.
Location-based charging
settings
Depending on vehicle equipment, the system
can also be operated with the My BMW App on
a smartphone.
Principle
Various settings can be selected for charging
at charging stations.
Display on the control display
If the function is enabled, the icon
indicates the location-based settings,
which are automatically saved and en-
abled.
To simplify recharging at known charging loca-
tions, some changed settings such as charging
mode can be saved based on location.
General information
Saving active charging settings for
other charging locations
The charging settings currently set in the menu
can be saved as default settings for other
charging locations.
When the function is activated, some settings
are automatically saved as soon as the charg-
ing process is finished and the charging cable
is disconnected.
The settings are saved based on the GPS co-
ordinates of the charging location.
1.
Apps menu
Saved settings are enabled as soon as the
vehicle approaches a known charging location
again.
2. "Vehicle"
3. "Charging"
4. "Location-based charging settings"
5. "Apply current settings for new locations"
Before charging, ensure that the settings en-
abled match the desired charging station,
e.g., charging mode.
Deleting location-based charging
settings
When the vehicle leaves a known charging lo-
cation, the settings are automatically set to
factory settings.
1.
Apps menu
2. "Vehicle"
Functional requirement
To use the function, a GPS signal must be re-
ceived.
3. "Charging"
4. "Location-based charging settings"
5. "Delete all location-based charging
settings"

Optimizing the high-voltage
Discharged high-voltage
battery and vehicle battery
battery's service life
Proper use can optimize the high-voltage bat-
tery's service life:
General information
In addition to the high-voltage battery, the ve-
hicle has a 12 volt vehicle battery, which is re-
quired for operation of the onboard electronics.
▷
Charge high-voltage batteries with a low
charging capacity at an AC charging station
or Wallbox.
▷
For daily use, operate the vehicle with a
charge level between 10% and 80%. A
charging target of 80% can be set for this.
With a discharged vehicle battery, no operation
of the vehicle is possible.
Charge target, refer to page 295.
▷
Recharge the high-voltage battery as close
to a planned departure as possible. A time
frame can be set for charging.
Service life of high-voltage
battery
Charging in the time frame, refer to
page 295.
General information
The performance of the high-voltage battery,
and thus the vehicle's range, decreases over
its service life. The service life of the high-volt-
age battery can be optimized by how it is used.
▷
▷
Reduce the load on the high-voltage bat-
tery by using an efficient, anticipatory driv-
ing style.
Increasing the range, refer to page 281.
Avoid direct sunlight at high outside tem-
peratures.
Charging instructions
Charging habits have a significant effect on the
high-voltage battery's service life:
Long stationary periods, vehicle
shutdown
If planning to leave the vehicle stationary for
long periods of time, note the following:
▷
▷
▷
If the vehicle is stationary for long periods
of time with a battery charge of over 80 %,
this may negatively affect the battery's usa-
ble energy, charging time, and charging
power during DC charging.
▷
If the vehicle is to be stationary for more
than 6 months, park the vehicle with a
battery charge between 50 % and 80 %.
Check the battery charge every 6 months.
Frequent DC charging with a charging
power greater than 100 kW may negatively
affect the battery's usable energy, charging
time, and charging power during DC charg-
ing.
▷
If the vehicle is stationary for less than 6
months, park the vehicle with a charge level
between 30 % and 50 %.
If the vehicle has been charged several
times in a row with DC, this system may
temporarily reduce the charging power to
protect the high-voltage battery. If reduced,
the charging power is reset after a few
hours. DC charging again can extend this
time.
▷
▷
Do not park the vehicle for longer than
14 days if the electric range is depleted.
Do not leave the charging cable connected.
Maintenance
The high-voltage battery is maintenance-free.
