use jumper cables with fully insulated clamp
handles.
Connecting jumper cables
Before you begin, switch off all unnecessary
electronic systems/components such as the
radio on the assisting and receiving vehicles.
Safety information
1. Open the lid of the jump-start terminal.
DANGER
2. Attach one terminal clamp of the positive
jumper cable to the positive battery termi-
nal, or to the corresponding jump-start ter-
minal of the vehicle providing assistance.
Contact with live components can lead to an
electric shock. There is a risk of injury or dan-
ger to life. Do not touch any components that
are under voltage.
3. Attach the terminal clamp on the other end
of the cable to the positive battery terminal,
or to the corresponding jump-start terminal
of the vehicle to be started.
Warning
If the jumper cables are connected in the
incorrect order, spark formation may occur.
There is a risk of injury. Pay attention to the
correct order during connection.
4. Attach one terminal clamp of the negative
jumper cable to the negative battery termi-
nal, or to the corresponding engine or body
ground of assisting vehicle.
5. Attach the second terminal clamp to the
negative battery terminal, or to the corre-
sponding engine or body ground of the ve-
hicle to be started.
Warning
In the case of body contact between the two
vehicles, a short circuit can occur while jump-
starting. There is a risk of injury and risk of
property damage. Make sure that no body
contact occurs.
Starting the engine
Never use spray fluids to start the engine.
1. Start the engine of the assisting vehicle and
let it run for several minutes at an increased
idle speed.
Preparation
1. Check whether the battery of the other ve-
hicle has a voltage of 12 volts. The voltage
information can be found on the battery.
If the vehicle to be started has a diesel en-
gine: let the engine of the assisting vehicle
run for approx. 10 minutes.
2. Start the engine of the vehicle that is to be
started in the usual way.
2. Switch off the engine of the assisting vehi-
cle.
If the first attempt to start the engine is not
successful, wait a few minutes before mak-
ing another attempt in order to allow the
discharged battery to recharge.
3. Switch off any electrical components in
both vehicles.
Jump-start terminals
The jump-start terminals are located in the en-
gine compartment.
3. Let both engines run for several minutes.
4. Disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse
order.
Additional information:
Check the battery and recharge, if needed.
For an overview, refer to page 362.
Open the covers of the jump-start terminals.

Tow-starting/towing
NOTICE
General information
The vehicle can be damaged when towing
the vehicle with a single lifted axle. There
is a risk of property damage. Have vehicle
transported on a loading platform or use a
tow dolly. Tow dollies must be used under

wheel is touching the ground.
Depending on vehicle equipment, deactivate
two-axle level control.
Additional information:
Two-axle ride level control, refer to page 282.
Safety information
Warning
Warning
When towing while safety systems or driver
assistance systems are activated, the behav-
ior of the individual systems may lead to an
accident, e.g., due to automatic braking or
acceleration. There is a risk of accident, in-
jury, and property damage. Do not use the
corresponding safety systems or driver assis-
tance systems when towing.
The vehicle can become damaged when lift-
ing and securing it. There is a risk of injury
and risk of property damage.
▷
Only lift the vehicle using a suitable de-
vice.
▷
Do not lift or secure the vehicle on the
towing eye, rims, body components, or
chassis components.
▷
For transport, secure the vehicle by plac-
ing special tire straps over the tire tread
surfaces in the vehicle's longitudinal di-
rection.
Pushing the vehicle
To remove a broken-down vehicle from the
hazard area, it can be pushed for distances
of approx. 328 ft/100 m at a speed of max.
6 mph/10 km/h.
Tow truck
Additional information:
Rolling or pushing the vehicle, refer to
page 136.
Transporting the vehicle
General information
The vehicle must be transported on a loading
platform or tow dolly.
The vehicle must be transported by an author-
ized service center or another qualified service
center or repair shop.
Have vehicle transported on a loading platform
or use a tow dolly.

well as specified loads and speeds, given by
the tow dolly manufacturer.
Tow rope
Observe the following notes when using the
tow rope:
Towing other vehicles
▷
▷
▷
▷
▷
▷
Use nylon ropes or straps, which will enable
the vehicle to be towed without jerking.
Principle
Make sure the tow rope is not twisted when
fastening.
Switch on the hazard warning system, de-
pending on local regulations.
Check the attachment of the towing eye
and tow rope in regular intervals.
If the electrical system has failed, clearly iden-
tify the vehicle being towed by placing a sign or
a warning triangle in the rear window.
Do not exceed a towing speed of
30 mph/50 km/h.
Do not exceed a towing distance of
3 miles/5 km.
Safety information
When driving off to tow the vehicle, make
sure that the tow rope is taut.
Warning
If the approved gross vehicle weight of the
towing vehicle is lighter than the vehicle to be
towed, the towing eye can tear off or it will
not be possible to control vehicle handling.
There is a risk of accident, injury, and prop-
erty damage. Make sure that the gross vehi-
cle weight of the towing vehicle is heavier
than the vehicle to be towed.
Towing eye
Principle
The towing eye is a device that can be
screwed onto the vehicle in order to, e.g., se-
cure tow cables or tow rods.
General information
NOTICE
If the tow bar or tow rope is attached incor-
rectly, damage to other vehicle parts can oc-
cur. There is a risk of property damage. Cor-
rectly attach the tow bar or tow rope to the
towing eye.
Tow bar
The screw-in towing eye should always be car-
ried in the vehicle.
The towing eyes used should be on the same
side on both vehicles.
The towing eye can be screwed in at the front
or rear of the vehicle.
If it is impossible to avoid mounting the tow
bar at an inclination, note the following:
▷
▷
Free movement is limited when cornering.
The tow bar will generate lateral forces if it
is secured with an inclination.
